It’s another busy month at CCA7, with a Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, an exhibition by local artist Nikolai Noel, and a performance by local artist-in-residence Paul Kain. CCA is accepting applications for the local residency programme to commence May 9th 2007.

Open Call for Local Artists in Residence

The programme provides artists with the opportunity for dialogue, space and time in which to explore new work, encouraging them to ‘free up’ their practice and take risks. The artist will occupy a studio (400 sq. ft) at CCA7, with access to the other facilities, such as our Archive, Library and education workshops.

Apart from producing their own work, participating artists will have the opportunity to engage with artists resident at CCA7 and International and Regional artists on the programme. During the residency, artists are asked to host a talk about their work as part of CCA’s Artists’ Talk Series, an initiative that aims to bring artist and community closer together through dialogue and discussion in the creative space. At the end of each residency, artists will host either ‘Open Studios’ or an exhibition to show work produced during the residency. Participation in CCA7’s Artist-in-Residency Programme does not include an exhibition in the InterAmerica Space. The Exhibition programme is run as a separate programme. All works produced during the residency belong to the artist.

Resident artists are expected to:
- Complete a report at the end of their visit - Participate for the twelve - week residency
period - Participate in CCA’s Education Programme through communication with students
and schools in Trinidad
- Have an open studio once during their residency
- Community Development and Outreach Initiatives (workshops / collaborative work)

welcome. (Please include a slide list and other relevant support material.)

EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS

FORGIVENESS – Paintings by Nikolai Noel

Local artist Nikolai Noel will be exhibiting recent paintings at Caribbean Contemporary Arts from the 17th of April until the 11th of May 2007. ‘Forgiveness’ opens on Tuesday April 17th at 6 pm at the InterAmericas Gallery at CCA7 and all are welcome to attend.

As part of CCA7’s Artist Talk Series, the artist will be speaking about his work on the following Thursday, the 26th April 2007 at 6 30pm.

Nikolai’s provocative paintings fill the gallery walls and are riddled with religious symbology, fused with images that offer the feel of enslavement and tension. The artist has designed these images as part of his own invented mythology, representing ideas about Caribbean experience with regards to religious domination. As one of the participating artists in the ‘Galvanize’ arts programme in 2006, Nikolai stated that the purpose of his work was to question the way in which human civilization structures itself, and the processes that lend to its organization.

In this series he depicts this concern with a multi-layered approach, and constructed parables exist beneath the splendour of colour and striking compositions. Depicting a succession of simple, but intense, well- constructed images, this body of work is a deliberation on history, colonialism, displacement and identity. Shrouded mainly with Christian overtones, religion’s own identity in Trinidad comes into question. Religion’s ability to divide and rule: as an indicator of class and race, as an imposed ideal offering social integration through conversion, and as an old colonial figure. The ambivalent role of Forgiveness contextualizes the exhibition, appearing as institutional manipulation. This then extends to the perpetual search for belonging through absolution of guilt: guilt for being a third world nation, for not being Black enough, White enough, Indian enough………all the politics and social struggles of a small island in full colour and graphite pencil.

Nikolai Noel has exhibited annually since the year 2000. Currently pursuing his degree in Visual Arts at The University of The West Indies in St Augustine, he has been working in commercial video as an animator after graduating from the John Donaldson Technical Institute.


CARIBBEAN: CROSSROADS OF THE WORLD

The Public is invited to attend the open forum component of the conference on Thursday the 19th of April between 9 am and 12 pm in the InterAmericas Gallery at CCA7. This forum will comprise a presentation of the project, introduction to participants, a question and answer session, and a moderated public panel, “Collaborative Ventures and Regional Networks.” Space is limited and interested persons are asked to contact and notify CCA7 at 625 1889 or 625 6805.

Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, is a collaborative project of El Museo del Barrio, The Queens Museum of Art, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. The Second Pan-Caribbean Conference is presented in collaboration with, and hosted by, Caribbean Contemporary Arts, Port of Spain, Trinidad, and generously funded by The Reed Foundation, New York.

Caribbean: Crossroads of the World is a 2009, three-part exhibition that will be held concurrently in New York City at El Museo del Barrio, The Queens Museum, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. It will examine the visual arts of the twenty-first century in the Caribbean and its Diaspora. The exhibition will be organized around three moments that mark the engagement of Modernity (1920-1950), the search for independence and the development of national identity (1950-1980), and contemporary trends (1980-the present). The project will consider art of the Caribbean Basin and include not only work produced on the Islands, but also centers in Central and South America, Europe, and the United States, where strong Caribbean communities live.

In accordance with the organizers’ commitment to a transparent and inclusive planning process, a roundtable of invited participants was held at El Museo del Barrio on June 30, 2006. Key individuals who work in the arts throughout the Caribbean, in the United States, and in Europe responded to the basic premise of the exhibition, and the dialogue set the stage for future discussions to refine its focus and content.

The upcoming roundtable at CCA7 will engage art professionals working in the Caribbean, regionally, and internationally as integral partners in the planning and conceptualization of the exhibition.

ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE

PAUL KAIN
Paul Kain has been a local artist-in-residence at CCA7 for the past two months. He has been working with youth members from the YMCA of Trinidad and Tobago towards a performance that he will choreograph and design. Collaborating his skills as a painter with his experience in mas making and his background in architecture, he has facilitated the current concerns of high-risk Trinidad youth to explore the connections between contemporary art and empowerment.

A number of local schools will be touring CCA7 on Friday the 20th of April between 10am and 11 30am to visit Paul Kain’s open studio and Nikolai Noel’s exhibition.

CHRISTOPHER IRONS
We say farewell to Christopher Irons who returned to Jamaica at the beginning of April. Christopher’s residency was generously supported by Gasworks of London and the Commonwealth Foundation. To read more about his work please read below.

KRISTY COLLADO
We say farewell to Kristy Collado this month who has been an exchange artist at CCA. In exchange for studio space Kristy has devoted time towards community development projects through collaborations with the YMCA.

The Commonwealth Arts and Craft Awards 2007

The Commonwealth Foundation invites artists from Commonwealth countries to participate in an opportunity in a biannual Art and Crafts Awards set to develop new skills, and encourage artists to gain international experience whilst sharing interacting with individuals from other cultures. The opportunity is open to professional artists and craftspeople aged 20 and 45.

Vermont Studio USA Residency

The Vermont Studio Center offers 4 - 12 week independent studio Residencies year-round (with a limited number of 2-week Residencies) for 52 artists and writers per month (24 painters, 12 sculptors, 2 printmakers, 2 photographers, and 12 writers).
