ART PAPERS DECEMBER

It is December and CCA’s office will be closing from the 20th December until the 3rd of January. CCA sends warm regards and best wishes for the season. We would like to send a warm goodbye to residency artists, Celia Alvarez, Yunior Perdomo (Cuba), and Paul Fortin (Canada) who return to their home countries as we re open. Residency artist Xu Zhongmin (China) will be hosting an artist discussion on January 9th at 7pm.

There are many oppportunities for artists this month with scheduled events and exhibitions also. A reminder about The Exhibition at Edward Bowen’s Studio for a group of contemporary artists. Those interested can contact Mr Bowen directly for a studio visit. For those of you who did not see last month’s posting you can select the link in the left margin – inclusive of a post-Galvanize introduction.

Toyamura International Sculpture Biennale 2007
Horizons Art Gallery ( see Gabby Walcott) and the Japanese embassy have application forms for participation in this Biennale. There is a size limit for the sculpture of 20 x 30 x 40 cms. The overseas application fee is 5,000 Yen plus postage of 130 Yen plus 2,500 Yen for the catalogue. The Yen is $0.0557 to the TT dollar.

The Cartier Award 2007

The Cartier Award for emerging artists living outside the UK is a major
initiative by Frieze Projects, the curatorial programme of Frieze Art Fair,
in collaboration with Gasworks and sponsored by Cartier.

Artists are invited to propose a new work to be realised at Frieze Art Fair
2007 which will be produced under the auspices of Frieze Projects.
The Cartier Award includes:
- A 3 month residency at Gasworks from mid September to mid December 2007
including accommodation, per diems and travel expenses
- Project production costs of up to £10,000
- An artist's fee of £1,000

Draw Your Soul Project
A global project called SOUL which is run by the Vardy Gallery and Satellite Arts is looking for participants in SOUL, founded on the belief that modest means inspire the greatest rewards. With pencils and A4 paper this project will be inviting individuals from all over the world to draw what they think their soul looks like. It is an inclusive project; open to all ages, nationalities, ethnicity's, abilities and religious affiliations.

All drawings will be collected by Reg Vardy Gallery and posted on
the website drawyoursoul.org. Five hundred of the drawings
will then be selected by the Vardy to appear in a publication
distributed worldwide. The final date for the return of the drawings
will be 19th January 2007.

The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten Call for submissions for 2008
Situated in Amsterdam, the Rijksakademie invites artists with three to five years of professional experience in all visual art disciplines (painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, film and video, new media and sound, architecture, theatre and even music and dance) to apply for one year residency programmes available at the studios, that involve undertaking various projects from research to production. The institution has 50 available studios and encourages reflection and discussion among fellow artists.

Kuona Trust International Women’s Workshop Kenya Call for submissions

Kuona Trust in Kenya, a member of a family of organizations of which Greatmore Studios is a part, is calling for 20 women artists (12 Kenyan and 8 international) to apply for a workshop that sees women from different walks of life converge for two weeks to create art and share ideas in the hope of returning to their respective communities to inspire other women artists. The workshop is due to take place in Kenya at the end of February 2007.Artists are expected to pay for their own airfare although there is limited assistance available for those that apply. Commonwealth Photographic Awards
'Achievement' is the theme for the 2006/7 Commonwealth Photographic Awards.
Entries are now being invited for the 2006/7 Commonwealth Photographic Awards organised by the Commonwealth Press Union (CPU). This is an open competition for all Commonwealth residents. The photographs will be judged on the interpretation of the theme as well as technical quality.

The CPU is an association whose membership includes over 1 500 newspapers and news agencies. It aims to monitor and oppose any measures or proposals likely to affect the freedom of the press; to improve facilities for reporting and transmitting news; and promote the training of all involved in the Commonwealth's press. Visiting Arts' Artist-to-Artist scheme: Call for applications
Last year Visiting Arts launched its artist-to-artist scheme which allows UK-based artists to apply to invite an international artist for a reciprocal two-week exchange. Gasworker Joy Gregory invited South African artist Bronwen Findlay, and Mark Gubb's invitation to Polish artist Janek Simon has resulted in a provisional invitation to Gasworks' Residency Programme.

The purpose of the scheme is to bring together artists who are aware of each others’ practice and to support new dialogues across international borders.
The selected overseas artist will spend a week with the UK artist, visit their studio, meet contacts, network and discuss ideas. The emphasis is on the development and research process rather than production and there is no prescribed outcome to the scheme.
